If you want to learn about one of the most famous and best-loved poets from Mexico, then this is the right place. You can find all of his poems for free on this site. Here you will be able to read about all of his life experiences and how it influenced him as a poet. This will include: how he was raised, where he lived, and what he experienced during the Mexican Revolution and the Mexican Civil War. He also writes about what it felt like to live in a dictatorship where freedom was taken away from its people for years upon years without any relief or hope that anything would change. This poet was born in Mexico City in 1914, but he didn’t begin his studies until he was twelve because he had to leave school to help support his family. In 1938, when the Second World War started, he began to write a series of articles that got him into a lot of trouble with the Mexican government at that time. With this trouble came the fear that he would be arrested and imprisoned for his words. So in order to avoid this persecution he fled to Cuba where he stayed for about three years before returning home. Upon returning home the letters from friends and fellow writers opened his eyes to how much worse it became under the presidency of Manuel Ávila Camacho who would imprison hundreds of opponents all over Mexico. He would also send many people to The Torture Chamber. As a result of this, he fled Cuba to the United States where he resided for about three years. In 1950, when The Revolt of the Poets took place in Mexico, he returned home and became a household name. In 1983, at the age of 69, he published his first book In Defense of Poetry that contained nearly one hundred poems in it. This would be his first collection of poems to be published in Mexico City under the name “Zurita” which was a play on his last name and a surname for a Spanish family in Spain where he grew up. In 1993 he won the Mexican National Prize for Literature and in 1994, to celebrate his 70th birthday, he published a book entitled La palabra y el hombre diferentes al que se refieren los poemas. In 2005, he received the Hispanic Heritage Award from the Library of Congress. He died at the age of 91 in Mexico City on December 3, 2004.
